A peek behind the curtain is a monthly traffic and income report, where I share the technical side of what worked, and what didn’t to grow Rhubarbarians.
Welcome back, nerdy nerds! This is where I share all of the techy, numbery, nerdy stuff about Rhubarbarians. If you are here for recipes, HOLD YOUR HORSES, and wait till next time peeps. Buuuuuuuut, if you are here to see how things went in August, Rhubarbarians’ 10th month, behind the scenes, let’s chat.
Ohhhhhhhhkay. Well. August was rough guys, not gonna lie. Maybe it was Summer. Maybe it was the moving mid month. Maybe it was aliens coming down from the sky and wreaking havoc. Here are the highs and the lows:
Lows: August took a major dip in page views. From 17,502 in May, to 18,458 in July, now only 15,345 in August. The blog took a slight back seat in August due to a major move in the beginning of the month. We moved about an hour away into an apartment in Seattle, and it took a lot of time away from creating content.
Highs: Even with the dip in page views, Rhubarbarians hit it’s highest revenue amount to date. I took on some VA (Virtual Assistant) work, which has added a much need income stream to the mix. Even without a sponsored post in August, I still managed to exceed my revenue goals for the month.
Alright, let’s take a look at the page views:
Well, like I said. 15,346 page views. I don’t even want to taco bout it. (heh)
Let’s move on.
Where did those page views come from?
OK. Let’s ignore that #1 spot, which is traffic that can’t be accounted for. Secure sites and whatnot.
#2. Pinterest. I am still going strong with Tailwind, trying trying TRYING to get that Pinterest spot to #1. #2 is great, sure, but I can’t help but feel like I am missing out on some potential viral activity with Pinterest. I am rethinking my Pinterest angle in September, and trying to see if I can get my pins in front of more faces. How many of you use Tailwind? Have you found it helpful? Any tips to grow my Pinterest numbers are greatly appreciated!
#3. Facebook. WOW YOU GUYS! From 462 hits in June, to 1,056 hits in July, to 1,561 HITS IN AUGUST! My thoughts on this are pretty simple. I bumped up my Facebook sharing group game big time in August. Although it got me a lot of Facebook hits, it sucks up hours of my day with the intention of raising Yummly and Stumbleupon numbers. Those numbers are barely increasing, so…… should I continue these sharing threads? The jury is still out on that one. I feel like I am getting many more Facebook hits, but they aren’t “real” hits. They are other bloggers coming to my site because of the group thread. Then leaving immediately. Ugh.
4. Google/Organic. YAYAYAYAYAY! SEO IS LIFE! I know we all hear it a million times as food writers, but SEO is king. I am happy with this being at #4, since I still consider myself a new blogger. People are actually seeing my stuff on Google. YUHHSSSS!
Now…… your top 3 favorite posts in August!
This recipe is absolutely my 1 hit wonder of the blogging world. It’s a recipe I posted in April, that sort of blew up and has been bringing consistent hits in every month. Keep going quinoa burgs! I love you!
I am SO stoked that everyone loved this salad as much as I did. That dressing is EVERYTHING!
What a shocker! I made this sandwich in the middle of moving. When I had like, a knife in my kitchen and nothing else. Who knew that this one would become so popular?!
So, did you notice a theme up there with the first 2? They BOTH have quinoa in them! I love quinoa, and am now rethinking my editorial calendar to include more more more quinoa! Give em what they want right? Well…. as long as what they want is something I want to share. 🙂
Now…… what you REALLY want to know about…… the moolah.
August was an awesome month for revenue! See that turquoise color up there? That is an income stream that I just started to create in August. I am calling it “services,” because it is an income stream based on blogging services I perform for other people. Let’s break it down:
- Mode Media: 53% of CPM Advertising revenue. This was my top tier CPM advertiser. Medium fill rates, medium CPM rates.
- Gourmet Ads: 32% of CPM Advertising revenue. This was my middle tier CPM advertiser. High fill rates, medium-low CPM rates.
- Google Adsense: 15% of CPM Advertising revenue. This was my bottom tier CPM advertiser. High fill rates, low CPM rates.
- Tasty Food Photography E-book: 85% of affiliate commission revenue.
- Tailwind: 15% of affiliate commission revenue.
- Mode Media Contributor Program: 100% of revenue from website contributions. I created stories for Mode Media’s Foodie website.
The Services income is 100% from various Virtual Assistant services I performed for other blogs/websites. I include this income in my report because I bill it through Rhubarbarians.
And that’s it! Phew. It’s a lot to take in, these crazy blogging numbers.
Now, for my favorite blogging resource in August:
BUFFER! I started using Buffer to schedule out all of my Facebook and Twitter posts, which has saved a LOT of time and energy. I actually started back in June or July, but didn’t get really into it until August. I can just bulk schedule a bunch of things, shuffle them around, and I don’t have to worry about it again until I am running out of scheduled posts. YAY! Highly recommend it! So……. the takeaway for August:
August was an incredibly difficult month to stay focused and motivated. Not only was the sun shining, but everyone was busy busy busy, which means that the blog was taking a back seat with not only viewers, but quite frankly, personal life. It’s important to stay consistent (something I need to work on!), and keep chugging along when the going gets tough. That being said, getting outside and enjoying life is just as important!
How did August for you? Did you learn anything new? Hit a milestone? Have a little victory? I’d love to hear about it!
Till next time dudes,
