A peek behind the curtain is a monthly traffic and income report, where I share the technical side of what worked, and what didn’t to grow Rhubarbarians.
Welcome back, nerdy nerds! This is where I share all of the techy, numbery, nerdy stuff about Rhubarbarians. If you are here for recipes, HOLD YOUR HORSES, and wait till next time peeps. Buuuuuuuut, if you are here to see how things went in July, Rhubarbarians’ 9th month, behind the scenes, let’s chat.
OK guys. Let’s chat JULY! Here we are, the middle of summer, the slumpy down time for bloggers. I am a proud proud lady today, because even with no-one reading blogs, Rhubarbarians hit it’s highest page views ever! A few biggie things happened, like signing with a new ad network, AND joining a tiny blog family that gets together and pushes one another to stay motivated. (HOLLA MASTERBLOGGERS!)
First up, page views:
I am STILL just shy of hitting that 20K mark! I have been waiting for months, and the way August is going, it doesn’t seem like it will happen until Fall. Damn summer. If you’ve been reading along, you know how crazy busy my personal life has been (just like everyone else’s in the summer eh?). Between weddings, social gatherings, and packing and moving to a new city, my posting frequency went from about 4 times a week to only about 2. You can definitely tell in that graph above amiright? Right around mid-month is when I started posting less, and it is obvious how much of a toll that took on page views.
But wait! I hit my highest page views ever in July! So refreshing to know that even when life gets busy, the blog stays afloat. YUHHHSSS!
So, where did those page views come from?
Let’s ignore that #1 spot, which is traffic that can’t be accounted for. Secure sites and whatnot.
So, #2: Pinterest! I mentioned back in June’s report that I started using TAILWIND to schedule all of my pins from Rhubarbarians. This awesome little website allows me to “set it and forget it” with pins. I am able to schedule pins for peak performance times, and am steadily seeing an increase each and every day. Yay!
#3: Facebook! I’ve been getting busy with Facebook sharing groups and my Facebook views more than doubled since June! It’s been quite the time suck, but definitely worth it if my Facebook views continue to increase the way they have been.
Now, your 3 favorite posts in July:
Big fatty DUH if you’ve been reading these for a while. These burgs are definitely my one hit wonder so far. They were featured on Buzzfeed a few times and have been steadily holding strong ever since.
Yay! I am pumped to see a July post do so well in the same month! This salsa rocked, so I am not surprised it did well.
This delicious vegetarian stew was a dish from Global Feasts Ethiopia back in June. I am started to see a vegetarian trend happening on Rhubarbarians, and I think readers are loving it!
DRUMROLLLLLL…….. THE MONEY!
July was an odd month for revenue. Sort of backwards and unexpected from June and May. I ended up signing with Mode Media in the middle of the month, which not only provides CPM based ads, but also offers revenue streams in the way of sponsored posts and website contributions to their Foodie site. I saw a GIANT increase in affiliate sales in July. It was like that big slump I saw for the last few months came back with a vengeance! However, I didn’t have any sponsored posts. I am still trying to only partner with brands I trust, and would use myself. I didn’t find any brands that fit for me in July, and my revenue took a hit from that.
Still, July was pretty lucrative, just not in the way that I was expecting.
- Mode Media contributor program: 100% of all website contributions revenue. I created 2 stories for Mode to use on their website. One on unique veggie kimchi recipes, and the other on small batch liquor cocktails.
- Bluehost: 68% of affiliate commissions.
- How to monetize your food blog E-book: 32% of affiliate commissions.
- Gourmet Ads: 35% of CPM advertising revenue. This company is my second tier CPM advertiser. Medium CPM rates, high fill rate.
- Mode Media: 27% of CPM advertising revenue. This was my top tier CPM advertiser for the second half of July. High CPM rates, medium fill rate.
- Sovrn/Lijit: 20% of CPM advertising revenue. This was my top tier CPM advertiser for the first half of July. High CPM rates, low fill rate.
- Google Adsense: 18% of CPM advertising revenue. This was my third tier advertiser. Low CPM rates, high fill rate.
Well, there you have it! I received a part time virtual assistant position starting in August, which should significantly add to my personal revenue, but am not sure whether or not to add it here in these reports, since the revenue isn’t actually related to the blog. What do you think? Is this something you would like to know more about?
Now, for my favorite blogging resource in July:
Tailwind! STILL! This was my fave resource in June as well. It really just saves so much time and energy. Love it!

Blogging as a business really does build brick by brick. The summer months are incredibly slow, and it makes you realize just how important having many streams of revenue is for a blogger. Still in my first year of blogging, I am realizing just how dangerous it would be to rely on just one stream of income. Also, It can get really tedious in these summer months, creating content and still have your page views plateau. Staying motivated is key, and remember that each little brick you add on, the better you are getting and the more you are growing your blog.
Baby steps. July is all about baby steps.
OK guys! How was July for you? Have you seen a stint in growth this summer like I have?
