The best homemade eggnog recipe! Learn how to make eggnog at home. Keep it simple or spike it with bourbon for a wonderfully classic Christmas cocktail.

Tis the season, friends! For classic eggnog. For BOURBON eggnog. For the BEST HOMEMADE EGGNOG RECIPE EVER!
It's the season for being next to the fire, curled up with a blanket, xmas tunes cranking. OR, in my case with this eggnog, great friends over for some grub eating and white elephant gift exchanging, xmas tunes cranking. Good times friends, good times.
The best eggnog recipe ever
OK, this is a BIG statement. But really, it is the best eggnog. Far and away better than any store bought you will buy. We like to add just a pinch of cinnamon to ours to give it that extra somethin-somethin. 🙂
If you're used to the store bought eggnog, this homemade eggnog will seem very different. Rather than being heavy and thick, this eggnog is light and airy. It's quite a bit easier to drink alongside all of those holiday indulgences. It also uses freshly grated nutmeg, which is KEY to getting that eggnog flavor. Fresh nutmeg is much more flavorful than pre-ground nutmeg. So just a few teaspoons goes a long way.

How to make homemade eggnog
First things first, go get yourself some high quality ingredients. Fresh eggs, whole nutmeg, good quality bourbon, and some pure vanilla extract.
- Separate your eggs into whites and yolks.
- Add 1/2 cup of sugar to your yolks and beat until thickened.
- Beat the egg whites with 1/4 cup of sugar until peaks form.
- Beat the whipping cream until peaks form.
- Gently mix these together (see recipe card).
- Stir in the remaining ingredients.
- Serve with a light sprinkling of freshly grated nutmeg!
We actually like to double or even triple this recipe and store it in mason jars in the fridge during the entirety of December. That bourbon keeps it from spoiling too quickly, and the flavors of the cream and booze actually meld together so well the longer it sits in the fridge. SO AWESOME! So, don't treat this as just a great recipe for a gathering. TREAT YO SELF! Make yourself some and drink a glass every so often during the holiday season.

I made this tonight and its in the frig chillin. 🙂 I changed it up a bit since Bourbon is my least favorite, I used 1/4 cup bourbon, 1/2 cup brandy and 1/2 cup spiced rum. It still has the bourbon flavor but a lot smoother. I subbed the milk for one part 1/2 & 1/2 the one part whole milk.... and I just used the heavy cream without whipping first...... I also increased the sugar just for my taste since I am a big fan of sweet custards. This recipe is a keeper and easy to make....just make sure you have a very large bowl for the final product to be mixed (larger than your kitchenaid mixer bowl). Thanks for sharing and have a Holly Jolly Christmas!!!

Aw yiss that sounds awesome! Bourbon, sounds like a great alternative to rum for me! Or...what about both? Heh 🙂
