Fresh, tart, and juicy grapefruits are a favorite citrus fruit all year round, but best at their peak. So, when is grapefruit season?

Hi, Rhubarbarians! Let's chat all about grapefruit season.

I have always been fascinated by how the seasons influence what we eat, especially as a vegetarian. I love how the cold, winter months give us gloriously fresh and vibrant citrus! That's right, grapefruit season is winter!

Grapefruits are like tart sunshine on a winter day, aren't they? They can be sweeter than other winter citrus fruits, but can still be lip-puckeringly tart. But when exactly are they at their peak?

    Let's get into it!

    When does grapefruit season start?

The start of grapefruit season depends on where you live and the climate that you live in. But, for the most part, grapefruits grow in subtropical climates starting in the fall when the weather cools down.

Here in the US, the states of Texas, Florida, and California are known for their amazing grapefruits! The growing season will last until the weather becomes too warm, typically in the spring.

So, when the weather starts to cool off, you know grapefruit season is coming!

    When is peak season?

Winter! Specifically January and February. The coldest months of the year.

Did you know that February is National Grapefruit month?

    Where to get fresh grapefruit

Fresh grapefruit can be found year round at your local grocery store in the middle and northern parts of the US. If you are in Texas, Florida, or southern California, grapefruits are available seasonally at local farmers markets or at U-pick farms.

Here in the Northwest United States, I can only find grapefruit at the grocery stores. I can usually find white, pink, and ruby varieties in the winter!

In this digital age, you can even buy fresh grapefruit online on Amazon.

How Can You Tell if Grapefruits are Ripe

Choosing the perfect grapefruit is simple, but involves more than just a quick glance.

    • The color: the skin should be bright yellow or orange, depending on the variety.
    • The weight: it should feel heavy for it's size, indicating that there is a lot of juice inside.
    • The shape: look for grapefruits that have a slightly flat top and bottom. If it is perfectly round, it isn't quite ripe!
    • The feel: when gently squeezing a ripe grapefruit, there should be a slight give. Avoid fruits that are excessively soft or rock hard.

    Storing

How you store grapefruit depends on how quickly you plan to eat them. For whole grapefruit:

    • On the counter: if you plan on eating your grapefruits within a week, go ahead and store them at room temperature on your kitchen counter. I like to place mine in a large bowl if I have a lot of them.
    • In the refrigerator: If you're a bulk buyer, go ahead and store the grapefruits in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for several weeks in the crisper drawer!

If you have sliced into your grapefruit or segmented it, you'll want to store it in the refrigerator and use within 1-2 days.

    FAQs

Have a question? You may find the answer here! If not, leave your question in the comment section at the bottom of article and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Are all grapefruit varieties in season simultaneously?

No, different grapefruit varieties have slightly varied growing seasons. For example, Ruby Reds are often at their peak from late fall to early spring, while Oro Blancos may have a slightly different harvest window. It's advisable to check the specific seasonality of the grapefruit variety you prefer.

Where can I find out the grapefruit season in my region?

The local climate greatly influences grapefruit seasons, so it's recommended to check with local farmers' markets, grocery stores, or agricultural extension services for accurate and region-specific information. They can provide insights into when grapefruits are freshest and most abundant in your area.

Can I find grapefruits outside of their typical season?

While grapefruits are primarily in season during the cooler months, some varieties may be available year-round due to different growing regions and harvesting techniques. However, for the freshest and most flavorful experience, it's advisable to enjoy grapefruits during their peak season.
