    Ingredients and equipment

Full ingredients and instructions are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this article.

    Ingredients:

    • Frozen meatballs: we use store bought vegan meatballs. Our favorite meatballs are the Trader Joe's meatless meatballs or the Gardein meatballs are a great option! Make sure the meatballs are slightly smaller meatballs, and not huge ones.
    • Crescent roll dough: look for an 8oz package of crescent rolls in the refrigerated section at your grocery store. Just be sure to read the label to make sure it's vegetarian!
    • Marinara sauce: for making the red eyes and for the dipping sauce. Our favorite is Rao's marinara sauce. You can also use edible eyeballs!

    Equipment:

    • An oven. For cooking the meatballs.
    • A cookie sheet. For cooking the meatballs.
    • A large cutting board. For rolling out the dough. I love our large OXO cutting board!
    • A large sharp knife or a pizza cutter. For cutting the dough.
    • A toothpick or squeeze bottle. These condiment bottles work great, but a toothpick works fine too.
    • A medium or large bowl. For serving with marinara sauce.

    Step by step instructions

These are very simple to make, but these photos will help you with the detailed instructions! Full ingredients and instructions are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this article.

    • Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
    • Spread out your frozen meatballs on a cookie sheet (we lined ours with parchment paper) so that they can thaw for a few minutes.
    • Unroll your crescent roll dough on a large cutting board.
    Flattened out crescent dough
    • pinch together the dotted lines with your finger tips.
    • Gently press perforations and flatten out the lines so that all of the holes are gone.
    • Strips of crescent dough cut with a knife
    • Strips of crescent dough
    • Cut the dough into ¼" thin strips width wise.
    • You will need 24 crescent roll strips and probably won't use all of the dough.
    Wrapping crescent dough around meatballs
    • Wrap each meatball with 2 strips of dough, creating a mummy look (see the photo above).
    • Make sure to leave a little open space for the face of the mummy.

    • Spread the mummy meatballs out on the baking sheet, making sure that they are not touching.
    • Bake for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly.
Adding eyes with marinara sauce to Halloween mummy meatballs
    • Dip the end of a toothpick into marinara sauce and dab the sauce onto the exposed part of the meatball. Do this twice to make 2 eyes.
    • Serve with marinara sauce for dipping. The perfect kid-size appetizer!

    Serving suggestions

We love serving these as a Halloween appetizer! They are the perfect size for finger food at your Halloween party and are perfect for dipping into marinara sauce.

We have also served them alongside some spooky spaghetti for dinner and it was a huge hit with our 5 year old son.

To serve as a Halloween party appetizer: place the mummy meatballs on a large plate with a bowl of warm marinara sauce in the middle. Add some toothpicks to the meatballs if you'd like or serve them as finger food.

Consider these for preschool parties! They are dairy free, nut free, and vegan.

Delicious homemade dips to serve with mummy meatballs:

    • Homemade classic marinara sauce
    • Creamy herb pesto dip
    • Creamy pumpkin marinara sauce

To serve with a Halloween dinner: you can either serve these as meatballs with spaghetti, a sheet pan meal like meatballs and roasted veggies, or serve them next to a cozy bowl of soup!

Fun and easy recipes to serve with mummy meatballs:

    • Pumpkin fettuccine alfredo
    • Roasted sweet potato Halloween bites
    • Black bean booooo-dle soup

    Recipe tips and substitutions

    • Make sure that you purchase crescent roll dough and not puff pastry. You can usually find crescent roll dough at the grocery store in the refrigerated section next to the cookie dough.
    • If you can't find crescent roll dough, look for biscuit dough or pizza dough.
    • Remember to leave a small section of the meatball exposed when wrapping with the dough strips. This will ensure that you have a space for the marinara eyes.
    • If you can't find frozen vegetarian meatballs (usually in the natural or vegetarian section at the grocery store), here is a recipe to make your own. Just make sure that they are cooked and refrigerated before baking them with the crescent dough.
    • You can swap the marinara sauce for ketchup or use mustard to make yellow eyes.
    • If you want to get super duper fun, try adding some candy eyes to the meatballs mummies!

    Make them ahead of time

It's always great to have your Halloween party appetizers ready to go before your guests arrive!

To make these mummy meatballs ahead, we recommend doing all of the prep work and leave the baking (and eye making) until right before serving. Wrap the meatballs in the strips of dough and have them laid out on a cookie sheet in the refrigerator. Pop them in the oven before serving and quickly add the red eyes.

If you don't have access to an oven before serving and need to cook them ahead of time, you can. You will need to serve them at room temperature, which isn't as appetizing in our opinion. We don't recommend reheating them in a microwave as the dough will become soggy.

    Storing

Store any leftover mummy meatballs in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. We recommend reheating them in the oven before serving.

    FAQs

How do I make these vegan?

These mummy meatballs are vegan! Just double check the ingredients on your meatballs, crescent dough, and sauce.

How do I make these gluten free?

You'll need to purchase gluten free meatballs and gluten free crescent dough. We haven't tested this recipe with gluten free ingredients.

Can I use puff pastry dough?

No. Puff pastry dough is very different from crescent dough. If you can't find crescent roll dough try biscuit dough or pizza dough.

Can I just use ketchup for the eyes?

Of course! Feel free to use any sauce you'd like. Mustard would make tasty yellow eyes!

    Ingredients

    • 12 whole frozen vegetarian meatballs
    • 1 8 ounce package crescent roll dough
    • ¼ cup marinara sauce or spaghetti sauce
    • marinara sauce or spaghetti sauce for serving

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 375° F.
    • Spread out your frozen meatballs on a sheet pan and let them defrost a bit while you prepare the dough.
    • Open your package of dough and gently roll it out onto a large cutting board or work surface. Using the tips of your fingers, gently pinch together the dotted lines and flatten them out so that you don't have any holes in the dough.
    • Cut ¼" strips in the dough width-wise using a large knife or a pizza cutter. You will need 24 strips. You may not need all of the dough.
    • Gently wrap 2 strips around each meatball, creating a mummy like look and leaving a small area for the eyes. (see photos above)
    • Place them back on the sheet pan and bake in the oven for 13-15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown.
    • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Until they are still warm but cool enough to handle.
    • To make the eyes: dip the end of a toothpick into marinara sauce and dab a small drop of the sauce onto the exposed part of the meatball. Do this twice to make 2 eyes. (see photos above)
    • Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
