Ooooooh.... look at this bright and cheery cocktail! Can you tell I'm getting into the spring vibes by adding flowers to my food photos? These yellow flowers have now made their 2nd appearance.

But, the start of spring means the end of citrus season. Citrus just brightens things up, ya know? I mean, just look at how bright and cheery these golden bombs are!! So yellow and beautiful. How can you NOT be in a good mood looking at citrus?

So, it's totally hipster and cliche these days (thank you Mad Men), but my fave cocktail is the old fashioned. With rye whiskey. 4 FRIGGIN OUNCES OF RYE WHISKEY!

    Yep, 4.

I normally muddle an orange slice and a maraschino cherry with some sugar and bitters, then stir in whiskey. Buuuuut if you've been reading this blog a while, you know I like to try new things with my fave recipes. Like a blackberry lemon old fashioned, or a blood orange rosemary gin cocktail.

Enter, the tart, yet mellow meyer lemon. Ahem... total score. The meyer lemon adds so much brightness to this winter go-to. So, instead of just muddling a slice, I added some freshly squeezed juice.

Ah yeah. Mellow meyer lemon juice, a bit of sugar, bitters, and rye. Sounds amazing, right?

Some notes about this meyer lemon old fashioned:

    1. I used rye, but you can use bourbon or even whiskey if you'd like.
    2. I like mine strong with 4oz of rye, but if you'd like a more diluted cocktail just add as much rye as you'd like.
    3. For a sweeter cocktail, add a full teaspoon of sugar.
    4. I like to let the cherry sit in the cocktail until it's gone, then eat the cherry. ?

Have you tried a New York sour cocktail yet? You will love it!

    Ingredients

    • ½ medium meyer lemon
    • ½ teaspoon sugar
    • 6 dashes angostura bitters
    • 4 oz rye, bourbon, or whiskey (go for the good stuff)
    • ice, meyer lemon wedges, maraschino cherry for serving (optional)

    Instructions

    • Cut your half meyer lemon so that you have 2 wedges. Gently rub the rim of your cocktail glass with the juicy part of the lemon. Squeeze the juice from both wedges into your glass. Add the sugar and bitters and stir just to dissolve.
    • Add ice to your glass if you wish. Add 4 oz of rye and give a gentle stir. Top with lemon wedges and a maraschino cherry (optional). Enjoy!

This cocktail was absolutely terrible. Way too sour and did not mix well with my Costco whiskey. I am sorry but this recipe is terrible, PLEASE considering removing from your blog as it tarnishes your other wonderful concoctions. god bless you

Did you use meyer lemons or regular lemons? This recipe is written for meyer lemons, which are quite a bit sweeter than regular lemons.
